to the secret mix of
ingredients you put in
there, it might actually be the result
of the composition of the borosilicate
glass dish you make it in. We say
borosilicate glass, we mean, of course,
Pyrex. This iconic bakeware has been
a kitchen essential since 1913, when
Bessie Littleton, the wife of a Corning
Glass scientist, asked her husband for
a replacement for a broken casserole
dish. He repurposed some of the
tempered lantern glass his company
had developed for use on the America
railroad. The cake she baked was the
first food to be made in Pyrex but it
certainly wasn’t the last.
The core benefits of this glass
cookware continue to this day. It’s
easy to clean, oven, microwave,
freezer and dishwasher safe and
hygienic to use. Thanks to the
aforementioned glass, it’s thermal
shock resistant too, able to go from
a freezing -40°C to a roasting 300°C
without cracking up. Every cook needs
some Pyrex in their cupboard.
