Here’s what makes up the most popular espresso-based coffees,
along with expert insight from Moonroast’s Francis Bradshaw.
Espresso
“We only make double espresso. You might make
a single at home, but you put half the coffee in a
single, with half the yield – you might put 9 in
and get 18 out.”
Espresso Macchiato
“Macchiato means staining – It’s really just a fluff
of milk to add a touch of sweetness.”
Cappuccino
“For a cappuccino, you’re incorporating more
bubbles into your milk – you’re increasing the
volume of milk by sucking a little air in.”
Flat White
“For a flat white, you’ve stretched the milk and it
almost looks like gloss paint. It will be in a 6 or
8oz cup.”
Latte
“A latte will be in an 8 or 10oz cup. A latte is
gentler than a flat white, which has a bit more of a
kick to it.”
Americano
“Always put the hot water in the cup first and
then express your espresso on top and then you
get the crema, which looks nice.”
Long Black
“A long black is actually shorter than an
americano – it’s served in a 6 or 8oz cup.”
