THE HARPER’S BAZAAR INSPIRES project—which launched in March 2015 with khadi—is an annual initiative that involves designers from across the country and brings them together to celebrate one chosen textile. The idea is to free India’s native weaves from preconceived notions, and to get designers to start using them as practical fabrics that are suitable for the Indian climate and socio-cultural milieu. It is easy to glorify so-called traditional weaves and relegate them to festive and occasion-wear. But if designers do not experiment with these textiles now, and come up with creative ways of using them without being burdened by their past, weaves like ikat will die for simple lack of demand or interest. The versions of traditional weaves we see today are the product of centuries, if not 431-88 by Shweta Kapur, Abraham & Thakore, Abu Jani Sandeep millennia, of technical and design Khosla, Amalraj Sengupta, AM:PM, AM.IT, Reboot by Anuj evolution.
