Let’s talk taglines! A tagline is a short sentence or catchphrase developed to advertise a company as a whole entity. A tagline is not a slogan, and I feel it is important to point that out before we go any further. A slogan is used to advertise product lines within a company and can change with seasons and promotions. Slogans are bold and attention grabbing whereas a tagline needs to stand the test of time, unless you are planning on completely rebranding your company.

Your tagline should clearly identify at least one of your company values and reinforce your brand. If you can identify something that makes your product or business superior to your competitors, this is the place to do it. Typically, taglines are less than ten words, and some sources recommend keeping them less than seven words. As you can imagine, this often represents a stumbling block for most small business owners. Sometimes writing less is more difficult than writing more. Generally, I recommend thinking about your tagline as the text version of your logo. You want to convey your brand without overwhelming the customer with words.
