Handmade Seller Magazine Issue 9 | June 2016 | Page 18

So you’ve done your research, put the hard work in, and got a clean-looking website that works how it should, loads quickly, and encourages users to interact with strategically placed CTAs (calls to action)? Great work! Then why do you still end up looking at Google Analytics each week to find that almost all your traffic is direct (people physically typing in your URL) or from a Facebook referral? How do you drive more traffic to your site organically and attract users searching for your product, rather than typing in your company name?

If you’re like many other handmade sellers reading this, then I’m guessing that you don’t have a huge budget to dedicate to Ad Words, or that you’re competing for some pretty pricey keywords. But there are two kinds of traffic that reach your site: Organic and paid. If you don’t pay for clicks, then it’s likely that your traffic is almost 100% organic, apart from the occasional sponsored Facebook or Twitter campaign.

If you want to increase your site visitors without increasing your budget, the good news is that it’s OK to be a small fish in a big sea if you happen to be a good swimmer. While you may be competing against large companies with established domain authority, brand recognition, and a hefty digital marketing budget, Google’s algorithm is becoming increasingly more intelligent and responding to over 200 different kinds of ranking factors, a huge one of which is the number of quality links pointing to your site.
