HANDMADE GOODNESS QUARTERLY JUNE 2014 ISSUE 2 Tutorial: Fast & Easy Photo Transfer to Canvas Learn to transfer a photo or image onto a canvas in 9 steps! By Xanriss Single Line Artist xandrissart.com Have you ever been so inspired by an image that you really wanted a carbon copy of it on canvas to immediately start painting, but didn’t have a way to get past the drawing and planning stages before the creative urge left? Let me show you a fast, simple and free method I developed to get you there before the mistral leaves. I’m a visual artist who uses photos for inspiration and reference as I paint. Sometimes, I’ll just draw right on the art surface to start the work. A lot of the time though, I have a photo image and need a simple copy of it on the canvas or board- an outline. Graphite paper can be purchased at art stores and used in this way. I came across something just as effective, free, saves a trip to the store and is probably already in your house- newsprint and pencil! The Image Transfer Process PREPARATIONS A. Prepare your canvas. Make sure it’s ready to be painted on. B. Is the image something you can write on in ink? If it’s in a book or is a favorite photo- you’ll need to get a photocopy. (I love home printers!) Have it printed out to the size you’ll need it to be on your canvas. 9
