Practice Management
The practice management rotation provides education for residents to learn about the nuances of coding and
billing, physician compliance, physician leadership, personal finances, and finding a job after residency.
ICU rotation
Occurring in the second half of PGY1 year, the ICU rotation provides interns with opportunities to perform inpatient
procedures, a unique exposure in managing complicated patients, and the development of skills needed to be an
effective senior resident.
Procedural Rotations
These procedural rotations provide experience in:
› Botox
› Cervical cryotherapy
› Minor skin surgery
› Exercise treadmill testing
› Liquid nitrogen cryosurgery
› Fiberoptic rhinolaryngoscopy
› Electrocautery
› Joint injection
› Colposcopy
› Fine needle aspiration
› Long-Acting Removable

Electives
Halifax Health - Family Medicine Residency Program includes more than four months of elective training.
Established electives include advanced obstetrics, neurology, advanced practice management, pulmonology,
gastroenterology, sports medicine, infectious disease and international missions. Residents have used elective time
and available funding to serve on medical missions to Ecuador, Haiti, Kenya, Guatemala, Honduras, and Argentina.
Choices are not limited to established electives. Residents have flexibility in structuring their elective experiences to
satisfy their own individual needs and interests. Great opportunities, for example, exist in end-of-life care,
community medicine, research, geriatrics and alternative medicine.
