Annotating

Many teachers will have you read and annotate an article. That is, they want you to think while you're reading and mark up the text to help you develop a deeper understanding of it. Here are some COMMON annotation tools -- your teacher might have you use different ones, but here are some commonly used symbols to use when reading a text.:

Circle words that are unfamiliar!

Use an asterisk or star to mark important details

A "C" to show a connection to prior knowledge

A question mark at parts that are confusing

Remember, you can use Post-it notes if the copy of the article, book, etc. doesn't belong to you!
