MARTIN
BARRE
(JETHRO TULL)
by John Stix
T
o most people Ian
Anderson is Jethro Tull.
Literally and figuratively he
was both captain and navigator
for Tull since its conception in the
late 60s. But for over 40 years
his first mate was guitarist Martin
Barre. Starting with the Stand Up
album, Martin Barre captivated
Tull fans with his unique brand
of parts playing and soloing. His
style is melodic rockin’ blues lines
played over non-blues changes,
and sculpted with architectural
editing skills. When it comes
to Hall of Fame playing Barre
could have gone home after
his improvised one take solo in
“Aqualung.” Today, with Tull on
extended hiatus, Barre continues
as a solo artist playing the classic
Tull songs and originals. His
newest recording is titled Back
to Steel. His list of essential
albums reflects a kaleidoscope
view of rock guitar.
