I
know Dire Straits when I hear
them. All the fills here are just
right. “Sultans of Swing” is still
the prime example of the way
Mark plays. He’s out there on his own,
almost like an 80’s Hank Marvin or Peter
Green. He’s got that pure thing about his
playing. It’s so uncluttered. Every note
he plays is crystal clear. It’s great to
see someone play like that and have the
courage to play, without worrying about
different effects, or how to be a heavy
metal guitar hero, and yet, come across
as a musician. He’s a very mature player.
If you use a sound which is really you,
you’ll overcome that heavy metal dirge of
distortion and shine out as an individual
player, which is what Mark Knopfler does.
It’s also what I hope to do. ■
