RIFFING I know Dire Straits when I hear them. All the fills here are just right. “Sultans of Swing” is still the prime example of the way Mark plays. He’s out there on his own, almost like an 80’s Hank Marvin or Peter Green. He’s got that pure thing about his playing. It’s so uncluttered. Every note he plays is crystal clear. It’s great to see someone play like that and have the courage to play, without worrying about different effects, or how to be a heavy metal guitar hero, and yet, come across as a musician. He’s a very mature player. If you use a sound which is really you, you’ll overcome that heavy metal dirge of distortion and shine out as an individual player, which is what Mark Knopfler does. It’s also what I hope to do. ■ GARY MOORE ON “LADY WRITER” BY DIRE STRAITS by John Stix Gary Moore 1984 by Neil Zlozower - Atlas Icons 12 GUITAR TRICKS INSIDER DIGITAL EDITION OCT/NOV
