Musicians on the same record label
often play on fellow artists’ albums and
in 1978, Nicolette Larson was a fresh
vocalist for Warner Bros. Her producer
and engineer also worked with another
Warner act you may have heard of – Van
Halen. In short order, Eddie Van Halen
was brought in to drop a solo on Nicole’s
tune, “Can’t Get Away from You.” Just
past the 2:00 mark, Eddie swooped in
with his patented wild bends, dives, and
wicked crunch tone. He even sneaks in a
classic EVH shred run at the song’s finale.

This session found SRV guesting on a slick
pop-rock number by actor Don Johnson
(Miami Vice). The song itself was cheesy
MTV fodder and, in retrospect, Johnson’s
limited vocal range is almost laughable.
Fortunately, the Austin axemaster came
along to save the day with a simply barn-
burning Strat solo. Go, Stevie, go! ■
