LISTEN HEAR
The spirit of your music on all three records
is made. You’re almost more of a jazz band
than a rock band – meaning that you listen
to each other to make the music rather than,
“Let’s just play the arrangement. You made a
mistake – we have to go back.”
That’s something. I don’t know how to play the
same way twice. If I do I feel like I’m copying
myself. And there’s no fun there to me. A lot of
musicians can find inspiration in doing that – doing
something over and over until it’s just exactly letter
perfect. But the style we play is more right then.
I would guess you don’t rehearse very much
in the band.
We haven’t rehearsed with this band since we’ve
had a keyboard player. We started to one night.
It was real late. We’d been partying. We planned
on rehearsing and the equipment was late getting
in from Dallas. It got there about three in the
morning. We’d been listening to records and we
were hanging out – had a few drinks. We started
rehearsing and we just decided nah, never mind.
We’d been playing gigs for months already. I
guess the only rehearsing we do now pretty much
is at sound check. Sometimes we run through
something.
What about for the record? Did you rehearse
for the record or did you just make a rough
outline of the sketch of the arrangement?
That’s about it, really. A lot of times we write ‘em in
the studio.
Now is this your best album? You almost have
to say yes.
Yeah.
What’s the key – what’s the difference? What
made it a little bit more special?
We’ve grown and we had to do a lot of soul
searching while we were making this record.
