extension.”
One of Zep’s most revealing outtakes is
their approach to the blues standard “Key
to the Highway,” which is a clear precursor
to Zep III’s “Hats Off to (Roy) Harper.” Page
observes, “It has a similar vocal sound as
you could tell Robert is singing through the
amp there. This was something I found on
the same reel. I was looking for something
else to use, and lo and behold, that pops out
– ‘Oh, I remember doing that.’ It just sort
of shaped up in that kind of way and it was
the only take. There were no comps on that
track.”
Page was unafraid to add countrified blues
into the overall Zeppelin mix: “It was
country blues all night long,” he says on
their approach to “Hats Off to (Roy) Harper.”
