8 GUESTLIST ISSUE 88 / 2016 GET OVER IT Top 5 festival tips Here is our list of golden Guestlist rules for any festival goer worth their weight this Summer. 1. Know your music Any names on the lineup you don’t recognise, look up some tunes of theirs before you go. With a little extracurricular research into other genres, you’ll be opening your mind up to new things. You’ll also be able to eliminate people you don’t want to see, giving you a higher chance of catching all your favourite acts. 2. Don’t forget your tent (the whole thing, including all parts vital to keeping it up!) One of our team once ransacked her parents’ attic, only to get to a festival with a fully functional windbreaker. Take on the philosophy that all you really need is a bit of money to get you around and a roof above your head, and make this your priority! TWO MET POLICE OFFICERS PROPOSE AT LONDON’S PRIDE At the end of June, Pride held its annual parade through London. Among the laughter, bright colours and flamboyant outfits not one, but two police officers proposed to their loves. Both proposals were captured on film and shared on the internet, and showed some real love and how far we’ve come as in terms of LGBT rights. Leading the Met’s contingent in the parade, Inspector Aaron Clarke said ‘many older members of the LGBT community will remember a different style of policing, so it was a privilege to show them just how much the British police service has changed and diversified.’ Another prominent feature from this year’s Pride was London’s LGBT community standing together with those from Orlando following the horrific mass shooting earlier this month. 3. Early bird catches the good spot If you want to pitch in a place which is not a million miles away from the action, get there early. The longer the festival goes on, the further out you will be. In this case memorise the colour of your site and where you are on a more sober walk and any significant objects surrounding your tent. There is most probably hundreds of your tent which happened to be on offer in Argos and trying to recognise yours in the pitch black for hours is never going to be the definition of fun! 4. Don’t take anything expensive Pretty obvious really! Anything valuable just isn’t safe in a tent and keep a eye on your wallet when you’re out. Sacrifice the selfies and take a cheaper phone which has some good battery life, saving all your festival mates’ numbers in first. Bum bags have actually made a bit of a fashion turnaround, so getting the best one could end up saving you a lot of money (and tears!) 5. Don’t fuss Worrying does not sit well with the vibes of a festival - leave your worries at home and tune yourself into going with any flow that comes at you. You don’t want to be the friend that everyone’s drawing straws to share a tent with before you’ve even reached the campsite. Escapism is the morale of any festival, so let yourself go and just chill out! ENTIRE FESTIVAL CANCELLED IN CASE AVICII DIDN’T TURN UP. WAIT, WHAT? Yep, you did read that right - The Flying Dutch festival pulled the plug on their Swedish Journey event as they couldn’t guarantee Avicii actually showing up. The worry started when the Swedish DJ began pulling out of a number of his final worldwide gigs. Due to leave the music scene at the end of summer, his headline slot at this event would have been one of his final appearances in Holland. Festival organisers contacted Avicii and his team to get confirmation that he’d definitely turn up to headline, though received no answers. So obviously the organisers have gone ahead and cancelled the whole event. Strange, not going ahead with a festival because of one artist. Is Avicii really FOLLOW @GUESTLISTDOTNET bigger than the music? The festival, which also had Steve Angello, Dada Life and Alesso, was meant to take place on the 30th July - full refunds are being offered to ticket holders.
