NEWS 2016 / ISSUE 88 5 S W E DN RL O W FARC AND THE COLOMBIA GOVERNMENT FINALLY REACH AN AGREEMENT IN HAVANA It ends the 52 year conflict that has crippled the country and it’s population. June the 23rd was a day that went down in history, and for more than one reason. Whilst we were all out casting our ballots about the UK’s position in the EU, over in Havana the Colombian government and terrorist group FARC finished negotiations that have ended a bitter 52 year conflict. The new agreement was reached at a peace conference - sponsored by Cuba, Venezuela and Chile - will see the eventual disarmament and demobilisation of FARC that’ll be overseen by the UN. Once formally signed the Colombia security forces will redeploy to facilitate FARC’s movement from their current positions to 23 ‘Temporary Halmet Zones for Normalization’ that have been agreed by both parties. Upon arriving at these zones, all members of FARC who don’t face allegations of serious human rights crimes will have their arrest warrants suspended and begin a ‘process of reincorporation into civilian life.’ The group will also lay down their arms, handing over all their weapons to the UN who’ll recycle them into three monuments for the country. The conflict between the Colombian government and FARC grew out of the 1960s peasant movement where the Who has been ON ON or OFF this THIS month? WHO’S HAS BEEN OR OFF MONTH? Progress was slow, but almost a year ago the guerrilla group called an unilateral ceasefire with the government forces.
