It ends the 52 year conflict that has crippled the country and it’s population.
June the 23rd was a day that went down in history, and for
more than one reason. Whilst we were all out casting our
ballots about the UK’s position in the EU, over in Havana the
Colombian government and terrorist group FARC finished
negotiations that have ended a bitter 52 year conflict.
The new agreement was reached at a peace conference
- sponsored by Cuba, Venezuela and Chile - will see the
eventual disarmament and demobilisation of FARC that’ll be
overseen by the UN.
Once formally signed the Colombia security forces
will redeploy to facilitate FARC’s movement from their

government forces ever since. The bitter 52 year war has
claimed the lives of 220,000 people and displaced millions

slow, but almost a year ago the guerrilla group called an
unilateral ceasefire with the government forces. This new
agree builds on that progress and is welcoming news to
Colombia’s population who have had to deal with this civil
war for more than half a century.
