chairman’s cup T he young team of Milly and Ned Hine, Nico Roberts and Alex Webb proved better than their more experienced rivals in the final of the Chairman’s Cup. Played as a fun, yet still a fiercely competitive tournament amongst the Club’s patrons, Northwood defeated Alan Fall’s Mad Dogs 7½-3 in a great match to conclude the season. Northwood’s Ned Hine was named the Polo Magazine’s Most Valuable Player, while the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize went to Belle. This eight-year-old English thoroughbred is owned by former England international Andrew Hine (Milly and Ned’s dad), but was played by Alex Webb in the third chukka. Twelve teams entered this year’s Chairman’s Cup tournament, a hallmark of which is that every team gets a game on finals day. Henri de By, in his first season as a Guards patron, along with his brother Robert, finished this debut season with a win by taking the Farewell Cup with his Jacaranda team. They defeated Elio Leoni Sceti’s Il Sole quartet 6-5. Honours in the runners-up match went to Majid Sadjadi’s Maxima, who defeated the Mathias’ Clarita team 3½-1. The Directors’ Cup went to Dimitri Chebotarev and John Gunn’s Ivan The Terrible/Inspirit team. They narrowly defeated Hilali Noordeen’s Sifani squad 4-3. Another name that is more familiar with the high-goal, Dubai, took the honours in one of the runners-up matches. Tariq Albwardy’s team defeated David Lewis’s Los Lobos 6-4. The final runners-up game went to Konstantin Graf von Schweinitz’s Porto Ronco, who beat Vivek Rawal’s Tashan Polo 5-3. Northwood: Milly Hine (-1); Ned Hine (-1); Nico Roberts (3); Alex Webb (1).
