interview Clive with some of the players who have worn an AFB shirt, plus a few of the many trophies he has won “During the winter months I have eight ponies in work; I usually have about 20 horses at the farm in the summer and I will keep about 12 in work. Six will be for me and six for my polo manager Chino [Leiva] for when we play practices. Pete also keeps his horses there too. “I love choosing horses and have just bought a lovely new horse in Argentina. We saw Antony [Fanshawe] at Bauti Heguy’s place and he said ‘pop on this horse it might suit you!’ I pretty much bought it there and then. I didn’t need a horse but he is lovely. I always buy and sell from the bottom and this year I think I have one of my strongest strings ever. Clive’s team has always been called AFB, named after the family licensing business, Alfred Franks & Bartlett, based in north London, of which Clive is now Managing Director. He recalls those early days of playing lots of clubs – Ham, Kirtlington, Hurtwood, etc – with affection. “Every weekend we would play lots of different competitions at the smaller clubs.
