Action from the Copenhagen Cup Final, featuring school polo teams from Harrow and Millfield
G
uards Polo Club is not only home
to the annual Varsity match,
but also promotes school polo
through its Copenhagen Cup tournament.
This popular tournament showcases some
great sport from what must be some of the
youngest players to compete each year on
the polo fields at Smith’s Lawn.
So, last spring four leading school
polo teams – Eton, Harrow, Millfield
and Wellington – played over a weekend
to see which educational establishment
was best in the subject of polo. Harrow
came out top, successfully defending
the Copenhagen Cup 5 -3½. This was
despite some spirited opposition from the
Somerset-based Millfield School, the alma
mater of many a leading player.
Harrow’s dominance continued in the
prize-giving, with Hugo Taylor being
named the Polo Magazine’s Most Valuable
Player and his pony, Felicitas taking the
Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize. This
was an impressive achievement as Hugo
and Felicitas won both these prizes in the
2015 final too.
Professional player Jack Hyde, who is only
a fraction older than these Copenhagen Cup
players, but already making his mark in the
high-goal with Zacara, presented the prizes.
The sub final saw a contest between
two Berkshire-based schools – Eton and
Wellington. This year honours went to
Wellington, who had an impressive 7-4½
win over Eton.
