Girl Scouts deliver cookie donations
to local military units
Every year, customers help Girl Scouts from GSWPA send delicious Girl
Scout Cookies to U.S. military active duty and veteran service member
organizations by donating to Operation: Sweet Appreciation (OSA).
More than two dozen soldiers were set to deploy to Afghanistan in August
2017 from John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport. Girls from Girl
Scout Troops 46321 and 46244 in Cambria County delivered OSA donations
on behalf of the entire council.
The local Apache pilots and crew members from the 151st Aviation regiment
talked to the girls about their deployment and what it means to them to fight
for our country.
The girls loved getting to explore the helicopter and meeting the soldiers who
would be receiving their cookie donations.
Traveling ladies
of Ligonier
When a girl travels with Girl
Scouts, she gets an amazing
trip with her friends, learns
invaluable skills, and builds
confidence.
Girl Scouts in grades 5-12
formed a special troop to share
their passion for exploring new
places, which the girls call
“Traveling Ladies of Ligonier.” In
June, they traveled to Niagara
Falls, N.Y., for four days which
included seeing the falls at close range on the Maid of the Mist boat
tour. Next on their itinerary—a trip to Savannah, GA, the hometown of
Girl Scouts’ founder Juliette Gordon Low.
Girls spend months goal-setting, earning funds, and planning every
aspect of the trip, from accommodations to transportation. When the
trip is done, girls have experiences that inspire their next adventures
and the confidence to embark on them.
Troop leader Lori Fitzgibbon shared, “These girls learn planning skills and
get to make decisions on what they will do on a trip. They get to visit new
places and learn while they travel. That new skill the girls will learn will
stay with them and drive them to continue and want to learn more.”
