The Road to a Gold Award

Helping girls build confidence in STEM-related fields
Girl Scout Sarah Kerman knew from the first day of her senior year that she needed to take action .
“ I walked into my engineering class , and I was shocked to find out that I was the only girl in a class of 25 students ,” she said .
Kerman did some research and learned that women make up almost half of the U . S . workforce , but hold less than a quarter of STEM-related jobs . She made a plan to help that number grow .
Through her Gold Award project , Kerman developed and led a week-long “ Girls in STEM ” day camp for middle school girls to help instill a love of science , technology , engineering , and math and promote STEM careers .
Through the hands-on activities she planned , girls walked away with the building blocks for skills necessary for success in STEM fields .
While the aim of her project was to increase awareness of STEM and related career possibilities , she also wanted each girl to feel more confident in her ability to make important decisions .
“ I hope these girls will be able to make decisions about their futures , whether they choose STEM or not , with certainty and determination .” – Sarah Kerman
