Winifred was known most of her life as “Biffet.” Why or how she got the nickname is not known, but it meant a friend, teacher, or co-worker to many, many people, young and old.

As a girl-member of Girl Scouting, she progressed through the ranks to receive the Golden Eaglet, highest honor award. She became a Troop Leader and a Trainer in Newport, and a camper and Counselor at Camp Hoffman for several years. She directed girl Scout Camps in Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.

For forty years, she taught in Newport schools; she was head if the Guidance Department at the Thompson Junior High School for many of these years before retiring.

She was a very active volunteer helper at the office of the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, Inc., in many capacities. One of these was the sorting and assembling of Green S&H stamps. Campers who donated these stamps were able to use them for payment of camp fees, and many, many were used for general funds.

In 1926, she helped plant the hundreds of seedling trees which grew to be the Green Forest. At the 60th Anniversary program in 19981, she helped to plant a full grown tree in her honor.
