1 Relentless. Redefining. Unrestricted. As Ms. Bekah Schnei- der, Theatre Arts teacher, calls it: “Exhilarating madness.” The past year’s Theatre Arts class has empowered students with the ability to creatively express themselves. In theatre arts, students boldly took the stage, demon- strating fearlessness and audacity. “One of the favorite things we did this year was stage combat, and that was really fun because we had to fake punch each other,” said Aarushi Agiwal. Many students noted the clear benefits of theatre arts. Jason Cho stated, “I learned confidence, and I was able to clearly convey my thoughts with different types of expression.” “Communication skills. No matter what you go into in life, no matter what you study, you have to communicate with people,” Ms. Schneider mused. “In learning drama, you learn how to present yourself and how to get comfortable speaking.” Visual arts gave students a chance to express themselves through introspection and drawing. Perhaps an appealing characteristic of visual arts was its ability to engage students in new things, making them more open-minded individuals. Maria Galkina reflected on her experience: “My favorite proj- ect would be painting in the Cubist style.” All these important skills came at a cost, though. Students emphasized some difficulties in their experience. Many stu- dents struggled with being able to think on the spot. Tommy Wigenton said, “I needed to think quickly when the teacher gave me something to do.” GSIS prides itself in educating its students holistically. The theatre and visual arts program is a quintessential example of this. 2 Doodle me Statement Of Inquiry : It is important to find an understanding of self through expression and interpretation of cultural and personal symbolism. 7 th grade Sheng Shen 7 th grade Emily Keum Kyle Chang 7 th grade I chose the words by thinking about what my favorite sports and food were. Mrs. Kim told me not to use the same pattern and the color that I already used before. After that advice, I labeled the outline of the hu- man body and put in the words, patterns, and colors that we both chose beforehand. This is how I developed my creativity through this project. 7 th grade Sooyoung Bae 1. Jason Cho and Jeremy Hwang rehearse their scene about writing an apology letter to their girlfriend.
