Caelan Hodge

Attended GSIS all 12 years
Your journey began on the 6 minute escort to your bus stop , with a freshly polished apple for your teacher , Mrs . Peterson , in your new backpack , I quizzed you on seemingly useless figures for a first grader ( as any nervous dad may do ). “ Caelan , how many days are there in a year ?’ “ 100 ?” You questioned in reply . I continued encouragingly , “ There are 365 days , except on a Leap Year .” Your attention clearly faded as you shouted out , “ Look , a cat !” Regrouping , I tried , “ How many weeks in a year ? And I ’ ll give you a hint ; it ’ s the same as the number of cards in a playing deck !” “ Dad !” you rightly exclaimed , “ I don ’ t know . How would I know ? Why would I know ?” adding , “ This is dumb .” Yes , possibly dumb , I thought . Yet my boy was born on a night with hail falling from the sky only 78 months ago ! In weeks , it has been nearly 365 ... “ Caelan , did you know you were born on a Leap Year ?” I blurted out , blinking my eyes , which had suddenly become a little watery . “ What ’ s a Leap Year ?” you replied . I had no time to answer . We had arrived , and so had the GSIS bus . I gave you a quick tight hug . And letting you go , I called out : “ Asking questions is a good way of finding things out !” “ Okay .” and you waved back to my last words , “ Bye , Caelan ! Have a good day !” My head fills with the months and years to follow : Mr . Ciempka ’ s clapping game , drum lessons , Mrs . Cooper ’ s smile , summer camps , Mrs . Lawrensen , chess , Mr . Chan , LSS , MYP , PSAT , MUN , PP , USS , SAT , DP , TOK , EE … But in the end we all find our way home , and walking up the 11 steps to the front door , I remembered Aristotle : ‘ the goal in life is happiness ’. My advice is not really mine to give ; it is simply the subjective two words : Pursue Happiness ! Or , as the wise Kermitthe-Frog once said “ Life ’ s like a movie . Write your own ending .” It ’ s been a long road so far for you , but a short one for your parents !
All our love , and don ’ t forget to smell the roses ! Mom and Dad
