Act William Lee Grade 10 My name is William lee. I started swim- ming when I was in first grade, at about 6 years old. In the KAIAC match, I thought GSIS did really well. I think we came in fifth place. When I got third place in KAIAC, I was really happy. I tried really hard, and the results were good. In the future, train- ing is going to be more rough for us. For our final competition we had to train hard- er. If swimming doesn’t interfere with my studies, I’m planning on keeping up with swim next year. The Varsity Swim team strove for self-improve- ment and discipline rather than winning their first swim meet held at Seoul Foreign School. The team each focused on beating their own record. Junior Andrew Kim said, “Our main Swimming Records Names Matthew Ahn Michael Ahn Matthias Buesing Woo Bin Cha GeonYoong Kim Tae Hyung Kim David Lee William Lee Xingshen Liu Samuel Rhee Johnny Tuohy Tommy Wigenton Strokes 100 Free 50 Free 100 Back 50 Fly 50 Free 100 Breast 50 Back 50 Fly 50 Free 50 Free 50 Breast 50 Free Times 1:29.34 32.93 1:21.87 32.10 35.48 1:26.75 51.40 28.14 40.40 34.91 47.31 34.68 focus was not winning, but to break our own record.” To prepare for the meet as a captain, Kim tried to “cheer up” and “encourage” the team during prac- tices while preparing for their first meet. He also tried to be more fit and practiced flips for some strokes to improve his personal record. Seventh grade Matthew Ahn said the team tried to take advantage of all the training time. His goal was to always try to swim faster and beat his personal best even if only by a “millisecond.” Woobin Cha prepared for the meet by repeat- ing Tabata routine and worked on various exercises such as sprinting, diving and turning. For William Lee, performing in his races well and placing third in KAIAC overall was counted as an achievement. He said, “I prepared for my KAIAC events by training hard, even outside of school, eating clean and sleeping well.“ “I performed well in my rac- es, which was a result of my hard work and also luck. I felt excited before races, looking forward to what result I would bring out.“ Both of their teammates Michael Ahn and Taehyung Kim picked William’s races as the highlight of the meet. Michael said, “ Even though our goal was not to win, it was exciting our teammate did very well with his record.” 133
