The Group 4 science project was all about students challenging the nature of things around them . In this case , this took the form of film . Through inquiry and exploration , students matured and developed a limitless capacity for growth . The theme of the Group 4 Science Project this year was taking movie scenes and testing to see if they were scientifically realistic .
The project was challenging and a test of knowledge . Ms . Olivia Chan , an instructor for the Group 4 Science Project , said , “ There was the immediate challenge of exploring a movie scene through different ‘ lens .’
They
were all responsible for being experts in their field , but also needed to explain what they knew to their group members .” Louie Chung tested two scenes in the well regarded Tom Hanks film , ‘ Cast Away ’, and determined that both were implausible . One of his experiments involved recreating the Cast Away life raft and exploring if it could float . He reflected on his growth positively , mentioning that , “ I realized that to have a valid experiment , you need to be patient .”
Junwoo Kang also reiterated key values that the project fostered . His project based on the movie “ Welcome to Dongmakgol ,” which required hydrogen gas . “ We needed each others ’ trust , because we needed to explode balloons and burn hydrogen gas . I
learned a way to effectively communicate and ultimately work together well with others .”
Potentially dangerous situations fostered an atmosphere of trust and learning . “ I think it changed me as a collaborator ,” he said .
For students like Seungho Lee , the project was just about growing their interest in science . “ My project was about tsunamis and electricity .” He explained . “ It made me more interested in physics .”
Science is defined as studying the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment . Juniors took this learning to the next level through application and exploration in Group 4 Project . This process has led to limitless growth in character , understanding , and appreciation for science .

1 . Harry Cho connects balloons to a miniature house by tying balloon rope to the roof top of the house . Their group had to blow about 60 balloons and had to design and make a house to test the plausibility of a house floating away in “ Up .” 2 . Myeongjae Kim mixes warm water with dry yeast , while Hui Jun Lee guides him through the process . Through mixing hydrogen peroxide and yeast solution , their team tried to imitate the egg bomb in animation movie “ Big Hero 6 .” 3 . Si Eun Lee watches a video film of Min Sung Kim and Dain Shim ’ s group . Students often helped each other by reviewing each others ’ process documents and experiments .
4 . Hannah Kim cuts insulation foam to tie it to the wooden boat that her group made . Her group decided to investigate if it is possible to make a raft to escape from an island as shown in “ Castaway .” 5 . Betty Hwang explains to her teammates about the calculations needed for their experiment . In order to imitate a scene from Sherlock Homes , they had to calculate the velocity , mass of the mannequin , and height of the tower . 6 . Jun Woo Kang connects a hose to the gas pipe for the Bunsen burner , while Mr . Smith stays next to him talking about their project . His group tried to pop a kernel of popcorn in a balloon to test the scene in the movie “ Welcome to Dongmakgol .”
