Varsity Boys Basketball
A former college bas-
ketball player and a coach
for 11 years, new faculty
member Mr. Scott fit natu-
rally into the role of Varsity
Boys basketball coach.
Coach Scott said, “It
has been a great experi-
ence [coaching GSIS].”
“There are a lot
of kids who are
new to the game
and just learning
the fundamentals
of the game.”
Coach Scott decided to
take a step back to teach
the “fundamentals of the
game,” reminding him of
his youth basketball days.
He had to do this because,
in his opinion, “the ath-
letes experience here lies
in other sports more than
basketball.”
He realized that many
students are more familiar
with sports like “soccer and
baseball.” He also realized
that many students “play
basketball a lot in their free
time,” and that basketball
is “just starting to turn to
the direction of becoming a
popular sport.”
Therefore, he thought
starting from the funda-
mentals would significantly
foster students’ interests
and abilities in basketball.
Though he had to take
a different approach, he
said this experience has
“been very valuable.”
Throughout his first year
of coaching the Varsity Boys
basketball team, Coach
Scott brought a back-to-
basics approach to lead his
team, ultimately changing
the basketball culture here
at GSIS.
