The team was able, however, to overcome these obstacles to complete a successful season. Matthew Ahn, grade 8, said because so many team members had left, the team dynamic “felt dif- ferent.” The swim team struggled to “get points” at Jamborees. “Points are earned depending on the meters a person swims and where they get placed. Compared to other schools that have thirty or forty swimmers, we only had fifteen so it was hard for us to get points,” Matthew added. To overcome this challenge, the team “cheered hard for our swimmers during the race, keeping our hopes high.” Ashley Nam, grade 7, said she “faced a lot of challenges” this year as it was her first year on the swim team. She swam the butterfly stroke, a stroke that she “wasn’t used to.” 102 Winter Sports “I found it really challenging at first, especially at jamborees. But I think it was pretty cool to do a stroke for our team that I’d never done before,” Ashley said. Though the butterfly stroke was challenging for Ashley, she was “able to increase her time” by practic- ing“ in and outside of school and with Coach Scott’s help. Overall, the team had a successful season of beating their own records and making good times.
