Starting off the season with several new students and players transitioning from junior varsity to varsity , the boys volleyball team were able to close the season with improvement and hope for the team in the years to come .
Mr . Moc , who was the new Head Coach for the team said he was surprised to see the team ’ s dedication even though many players were new .
Louie Chung , sophomore , was one of the several new players who joined volleyball . He began as a player with no experience and ended as an All-Conference award winner . Louie ’ s significant improvement as a player was considered by the team to be a testament of his hard work and effort .
He said ,” At the start of the season it was really hard for me to adjust as I was new to the sport . I was able to adjust through hours of practice outside of school .”
David Kim , senior and captain said , “ I was surprised to see the rapid growth in my teammates .”
He elaborated on the rigorous practices the boys went through in order to improve , “ I remember one practice where we had to stand about three meters away from him [ Mr . Moc ] and receive his hits . By Mr . Moc ’ s sheer physical size , you could sense his strength . He would hit at us with so much power that our wrists would become red by the time the drill ended .”
Matthias Buesing , sophomore said by practicing he improved and acquired new skills , which made him more confident and made him become more reliable to his team mates during the game .
Even though the boys did not achieve their goal on the scoreboard they were still satisfied with the improvements they made and are optimistic for the future .
Louie Chung said , “ Our team went from having no hope as a contender for first place to an unpredictable team with the ability to accomplish anything .”
“ Volleyball gave me a servant ’ s heart . I learned to serve others but also to serve volleyballs . I didn ’ t always have the most fun , but I did not let that fact prevent me from motivating my team and directing them to paths associated with improvement , teamwork , and appreciation ,” said James Ahn , the team manager .
Coach Moc also commented , I ’ m happy with their skill level . From day one , all the way to the end of the season , they hugely improved .”
