Upper Secondary THEATRE & VISUAL ARTS #BE Expressive Aidan Schneider takes an impromptu pause from his work of being a facilitator for his group and sings like an Operatist with his eyes and hand elevated in the air. Ironically, the facilitators were in charge of leading discussion and keeping the group on task. In 3D Art the stu- dents learned how to express emotion through their artwork by learning the use of elements of art and design principles. Students were given the freedom to choose a recent event in their life that had special meaning and represent it through wire sculpture. Jennifer Kim, sophomore said, “The different elements and principles helped me understand the artwork more and explain things that could not be explained without using the elements of art and the design principles.” Jennifer created an artwork about the fun she had over the summer playing volleyball with her friends. Applying her understanding of the element of art; color she used vibrant colors of yellow blue and purple to convey a sense of happiness. “I think art is a way to express yourself because you can express emotions through anything such as colors and I think showing yourself through artwork is really important” , said Jennifer. Peter Lee, freshman chose his eighth grade graduation because on that day he wore a suit and he felt “different” wearing it. He said, “I tried to show just like simple expressions like a normal face with no happiness or sadness.” Itomi Ishizuka, sophomore said, “I chose my summer camp at church because it was the most fun event in my memory. Also, it was a new experiment in my life.” When asked how she expressed her emotion through her artwork she replied, “I expressed the emotion of happiness...The camp was very fun and exciting, so I wanted to show how the view of scenery was beautiful to me. ” Itomi portrayed this beauty through colorful lines flowing out from a ball of energy held by the hands of God. Jaclyn Kim went in an opposite direction of her peers choosing to focus on the stress of studying for SAT. She said, “the elements of art and design principles helped express my emotion”. She used thin wire to create a figure trapped in a net. This conveyed feelings of being trapped in stress. She applied red color in the words she wrote such as “SAT” and “lost”. The students continued this theme into their sec- ond sculpture where they were challenged to use a different material: foam board. They created a different form bust same emotion. 42 Academics
