5 6 Setting better records and honing their swim skills, the determined LSS swimmers displayed athletic improvement throughout the season. The students came to practice two days a week to improve and prepare for the meets. When asked if there were any special ways that they practiced, Coach Jung responded, “There is nothing special, but I had them practice speeding up. Also, I didn’t give them many breaks.” Eighth grader Tatiana Laroche, who had joined the swim team for the first time, said, “My goal for this season was to do a better job as a swimmer, but mostly in the breaststroke and freestyle, as they were my strokes during my one jamboree that I participated in.” She was able to improve her swimming by gaining confidence in herself as well as listening and trying to apply the coach’s instructions on breathing, arm movement, and leg movement. Seventh grader Brian Lee said, “My goal for this season was to reach 30.99 seconds by the end of our last swim meet of the season.” Unfortunately, he missed his goal by a mere 0.07 seconds. Regardless of this result, he said that he knows “swimming is all about getting better records and challenging yourself so I really don’t mind about not getting first place. Still, I hope I will next season.” Despite tiring practices every week and the challenge of achieving a better record, the students remained motivated and determined to reach their goal. 2014 Brian said, “Every day I see our teammates trying their 2013 7 GSIS All Time Records Girls 50 Free (USS) 0:35.31 50 Free (LSS) 0:35.18 100 Free (USS) 1:20.93 100 Free (LSS) 1:25.66 50 Back (USS) 0:43.55 50 Back (LSS) 0:45.09 100 Back (USS) 1:42.33 50 Breast (USS) 0:43.96 50 Breast (LSS) 0:44.90 100 Breast (USS) 1:34.68 50 Fly (USS) 0:39.58 50 Fly (LSS) 0:41.97 100 Fly (USS) 1:37.41 100 IM (USS) 1:37.41 100 IM (LSS) 1:31.96 200 IM (USS) 3:30.37 Lilly Kim Jackie Kim Lilly Kim Kay Herr Elaine Kim Eunjoo Lee Samantha Kim Hannah Cho Hannah Cho Hannah Cho Elaine Kim Elaine Kim Elaine Kim Elaine Kim Hannah Cho Elaine Kim Boys 2012 2013 2012 2013 2013 2013 2013 2013 2012 2013 2013 2012 2013 2013 2012 2013 50 Free (USS) 50 Free (LSS) 100 Free (USS) 100 Free (LSS) 200 Free (USS) 50 Back (USS) 50 Back (LSS) 100 Back (USS) 50 Breast (USS) 50 Breast (LSS) 100 Breast (USS) 50 Fly (USS) 50 Fly (LSS) 100 Fly (USS) 100 IM (USS) 100 IM (LSS) 200 IM (USS) 0:25.72 Jongwhee Jeon 0:30.79 Will Ko 0:56.44 Jongwhee Jeon 2014 1:16.40 Daniel Ku 2012 2:29.91 Tommy Song 2010 0:33.91 Denny Cha 2013 0:39.34 Daniel Ku 2011 1:23.65 Denny Cha 2011 0:33.09 Jongwhee Jeon 2014 0:38.72 Hidemasa Nakazawa 2015 1:15.95 Jongwhee Jeon 2014 0:28.24 Jongwhee Jeon 2014 0:36.27 Will Ko 2013 1:04.09 Jongwhee Jeon 2014 1:03.49 Jongwhee Jeon 2014 1:25.70 Daniel Ku 2014 2:27.00 Jongwhee Jeon 2014 50 m M Bre atthe ast w A str hn: oke 50 D a m -5 Ba niel 4. ck J str eon: 53 oke L 50 m eewo - 53. When asked how the team performed this season, Coach Jung replied, “They are getting so much better. More and more students are getting interested in swimming,” he added. “GSIS has a small team, but it’s getting stronger.” 1. Ms. Diana Mircea talks to Tatiana Laroche and Eric Shin wait and rest in the shallow end of the pool as they listen to their coach explain to the elementary swimmers their next exercise. The lower secondary students practiced with elementary. Thomas Hughes, and elementary student was said to be one of the best swimmers at practice. 2. Mark Park practices his breast stroke. Mark Park’s best record for 50m butterfly was 44.56 seconds. 3. Eric Shin, Woo Bin Cha and Ahn Gyoungmin talk to Ms. Diana Mircea as Eric Shin piggy backs on top of Woo Bin Cha. The students always asked questions when they were unsure about their swim practice plan. 4. Tatiana Laroche gets to the starting position for her back stroke. The students used swimming floats when they performed back stroke because it helped them to keep their hands afloat and work on their form. 5. Evelyn Anderson, in grade-five, trains with the lower secondary students. She steps out of the pool to take a rest after finishing her lap. 6. Sungun Woo reaches for the paddle for his practice. The students often used their paddles during their practice in order to build upper-body strength for a more powerful underwater catch, pull and finish. 7. Mark Park enters the recovery phase while doing the breast stroke. The recovery phase in the breast stroke is where the swimmer’s hands are moved forward to get into the initial position under water. 8.
