Explore After School Activities Worn out from the seven-hour school days, students often choose to balance academics with after-school activities. One such activity is Banner Design, a club initiated by several teachers who came together and decided that the IB Learner Profile banners around the school should be updated. “We realized that Banner Club, Chess Club, Papier Mache the banners don’t actually reflect our school in the sense that they don’t have personal contributions from our students,” Ms. Mast, the PYP Coordinator said. “We wanted to change this by having input from students in the PYP, MYP and DP. So we decided that the students in our PYP after-school activity would focus on drawing the images used.” The club has been quite successful. Fourth grader Evelyn Anderson said that she loves designing so much that she likes “coming to school to work on the [designs].” Evelyn explained the current club agenda. She said, “We are practicing drawing facial expressions and I’m choosing different emotions, particularly anger. I use a pencil to show these emotions.” Club members also look forward to the results Mrs. Kim paints the mache with Jake Jang. The class used a mix of of their hard work. Second-grader Jimin Son exnewspaper and glue to form the base of the paper mache.  pressed that she was “excited that other people are going to see [her] art.” The elementary students’ drawings, however, constitute only the first step in the alteration of the banners. After Banner Design has completed the sketches, they will be passed on to the 1. Philip Cho plays chess against his friend and he is happy because he got a pawn. Mr. Tirkey, the chess teacher, gave students time to compete against themselves to practice their chess skills. Ms. Mast concluded, “We 3. Aiden Harding and high school student David Lee play each other in Chess Club. One way chess club differs from all other clubs in the school, is that is allows students of all grade levels to be a member and compete together in KAIAC competitions. 4. Robyn Kim watches as Mrs. Lee demonstrates how to color her box house. With Mrs. Lee’s help and the exemplar in front of her, Robyn was able to make her own house with markers. 5. Kent Takamiya selects a yellow maker to color his box house. After school activities are usually mixed with students of varying grade levels and allow students to participate in multiple activities on different days. 6. Using colored pencils, Shravya Etlam and Trisha Palli work on their drawings in Banner Club. Each meeting students were given a different medium to use, such as ink, water color, markers, and color pencils. 7. Yuto Kumano, Nathan Ryu, and Yamato Kitabayashi look at the box houses that they made. They were very happy about the work that they had done, especially considering that they had been working on this for two weeks. 8. Harry Kim paints his Papier Mâché sculpture with blue acrylic paint. He tried to apply the right amount of paint, as too much paint may cause the sculpture to drip.  4/16/16 10:41 PM
