2 4 1 Growing Together to Win the Championship Radiating with power and force, the boys varsity volleyball team have exerted their presence on the court. Their enthusiasm, cooperation, hard work, and dedication is a testament to their achievements this year. “The sport of volleyball, in general is a lot about team bonding; and it’s always our goal,” said John Park, captain. Tom Nam mentioned that the team often ate dinner together, talked with one another, and sang karaoke together. He hinted that it was what made their team unique from other schools, “Our team is different because we’re really friendly to each other, help each other, and think about each other during volleyball games.” Not only has the team grown closer together, but they also have been able to prove their worth through their victories. Jongwhee Jeon has been especially ecstatic, “Last year, we lost to a lot of teams that we beat this year, and I think that by 3 winning, we showed how much we’ve grown.” “We always huddle in the middle of the court at all times,” said John. “We give each other high-fives and we’re always being positive to each other no matter what’s happening in the game.” True to their word, the team won the KAIAC tournament championship, taking down both SIS and KIS whom they had lost to during the season. Despite setter Zachariah Ward’s disheartening injury of a torn ligament during the middle of the Knights’ finals game against KIS, the team pulled through and won the series 3-1. As a reward for winning the tournament Coach Dalton allowed the boys to shave his head, closing out the season with laughter as they reminisced about the strong bonds they forged during their time together. 5 Kevin Choi Being on the volleyball team is definitely an experience that I will never forget. It changed myself not just as an athlete, but also as an individual. Being part of the volleyball team was like being a part of a family. I miss the team immensely. John Park Class of 2016 NEW_GSIS Yearbook-USS_Part 4.indd 195 “ I love that the team becomes more than just a team, but a family. After every point, we smile at each other and encourage each other because we enjoy playing as a team. “ “ “ Class of 2015 6 1. John Park watches Zachariah Ward practice spiking a ball over the net. The players performed drills to polish their offensive techniques, especially spiking and bumping. 2. Jin Weisser does the crab work exercise to warm 7 up for volleyball practice. The crab walk challenges the muscles to flex in unfamiliar positions. This makes it an effective stretch for the entire body. 3. Victor Jeong, Deborah Buesing, Ziho Hwang, Justin Lee, and Mr. Lozano cheer for the boys varsity volleyball team. Many GSIS students attended volleyball games to cheer on their fellow Knights. 4. Jongwhee Jeon blocks an incoming ball from a CHS player. His block was successful, and the rally with CHS was sustained. 5. Before the game against SIS, Will Ko, John Park, Jin Weisser, Paul Lee, Hijiri Kamigawa, Hyun Nam, Coach Dalton, and Coach Thomas join their hands and exchange encouraging words after warming up. It is a GSIS tradition for the coaches to pray for the players before every match. 6. Hijiri Kamigawa performs an overhead serve at the beginning of the game against SIS. It was a close game, with GSIS winning three sets and SIS winning two. 7. John Park, the team captain, bumps the ball and continues the rally with SIS. John Park was selected as the “Most Valuable Player” of the boys varsity volleyball team. 195 4/17/16 8:38 PM
