Grouchy died leaving a wallet full of money, which led to an important event later in the play. While initial uncertainty about the play caused minor turbulence for the cast of Here Comes the Cows, the positive responses from the audience and cast alike amounted to a remarkable success. “I would say this is my favorite production so far,” ninth grader Aidan Schneider, who has acted for three years, said. However, students admitted that they were initially uncertain about the decision to perform Here Comes the Cows. “I was kind of surprised,” eleventh grader Claudia Choi, who played the character Florence Hoxie, said. “I thought [Mrs. Schneider] would choose a rather well- known play so it would attract audiences.” Aidan, who played Hoots, was also anxious, but for a different reason. “I was a little nervous because it was very similar to something I did Molly Hopkins “Runs the local Soup Shack and Trading Post.” Stephanie Kim last year: Is There a Doctor in the House? Here Comes the Cows is like its spiritual successor.” Mrs. Schneider related her own uncertainties while choosing which play to perform. “This was super duper hard. I had to choose the play last year, before I came to GSIS. But I just didn’t know anything about the talent level of the students. Had they done full-length plays? What was the set like? I knew nothing. So I decided to research.” She explained that she received good advice from the faculty. “When I contacted several teachers and asked them what they thought, they told me to do a play. My brother, Mr. Kaiser, who’s been here for sixteen years, recommended I do a comedy with lots of physical humor, something that would transcend language.” It seems that this humor was highly successful, not only with the viewers but with the Penny Frumheaven “Lovely young stray, in love with Bronco Bronco” Mya Freeman Florence Hoxie “Property owner, needs a new umbrella.” cast members as well. Claudia, who had initially been apprehensive toward Here Comes the Cows, said, “I liked the play more and more as I did rehearsals. I found myself laughing with the lines.” Aidan added, “I think the most notable part was when Grouchy dies. That was enjoyable because I got to see my brother pretend to die.” As for Mrs. Schneider, she explained how the audience split their sides in laughter. “They laughed. They laughed so hard, they couldn’t stop, they had tears in their eyes. And people afterwards were like, ‘This is a great turnout! You never have this many people!’ So that was good to hear.” All in all, the eventual success of the production despite initial difficulties made for a satisfying and worthwhile play.
