Growing Made Easy Spring 2017 | Page 27

Carrots There ’ s no comparing a store bought carrot to the crisp , sweet roots pulled from the garden . Start them from seed early in spring , thinning out plants as needed . Carrots require well drained soil , but very little maintenance once growing . Harvest baby carrots mid-summer , then full sized roots in fall after a couple of light frosts .
Greenland Pick : try colourful varieties such as Purple Haze , Rainbow Mix or Yellowstone .
Tomatoes
A great choice for gardens or containers , tomatoes are the most widely grown vegetable ( fruit !) in the garden . If you have the space , try a blend of different types ; slicing , snacking or cherry . A sunny spot , consistent moisture and nutrients are important for a healthy harvest .
Greenland Pick : colourful cherry tomato varieties such as Sweet Million , Sun Sugar and Tumbler produce bowlfuls of sugary little fruits for snacking right off the vine or slicing into salads .
Cucumbers When grown up a trellis or stakes , cucumbers take up very little space in the garden and they ’ re a perfect choice for containers . Slicing and long English types are very productive and are perfect for salads , while snack types are perfect for pickling or eating fresh from the garden . A sunny spot and consistent moisture is all you need for a bushel of tasty cukes .
Greenland Pick : Patio Snacker produces crunchy , tasty fruit just like you find in the grocery store .
Beans
Just a simple 15 ’ row provides plenty of fresh yellow or green beans for sautéing , eating fresh or grilling . If space is an issue , fashion a tripod with 3 or 4 tall bamboo poles and plant a few seeds at the base of the stakes for a teepee of fresh beans .
Greenland Pick : The Dragons Tongue variety is very prolific producing bushels of beans from a single row . We love the colourful combo of cream and purple too !
