She further pointed out that the chair of the Women’s Parliamentary Group and the chair of the finance commission are from different parties, yet they have worked together constructively on national budgets to promote gender equality. This quota law is to be implemented in the March 2015 elections. Ms. Escobar invited ParlAmericas members to be attentive to how the law is applied for the first time and whether it impacts the number of women elected in El Salvador.

Ms. Escobar wrapped up by sharing examples of some of the ongoing advocacy efforts of the Women’s Parliamentary Group.

Most importantly, they visit various institutions to inquire how the law is being interpreted and applied, and whether it is functioning. They ask, for instance: is the police force well versed in the protocols regarding violence against women? Are judges given adequate information about the provisions of new laws aimed at protecting women? While respecting the independence of these organisms, they actively insist on accountability. Finally, the Women’s Parliamentary Group considers it important to share its legislative work with the public. Members participate in a weekly radio show, in addition to making regular television and web appearances.
