Herrington Harbour feel like a friendly place where guests are appreciated for their patronage. “This is a relationship-oriented business,” said Chaney, who is actively involved in daily operations of the Inn and Marina. “It doesn’t cost a dime more to use good manners and be appreciative when people do business with you than not, but you get a whole bunch more for it.” We especially loved the sandy beach and shallow bay, which Jed Dickman, Herrington’s Marina Manager says is “waist high to an 8 year old for 100 yards”, as well as the large, clean pool. Families will appreciate the abundance of clean towels and lounge chairs, while couple will enjoy pockets of quiet away from the kiddos. Many of the resort’s guests are slip holders or transient boaters who take advantage of the gas and diesel fuel, free 24-hour effluent pump out stations and all the other amenities of the resort. The marina has an entrance channel that is 80 feet wide and 7 feet at mean low water, and offers 600 slips, each with reciprocal privileges at Herrington Harbour North, a full service boat yard just up the road. The food at Herrington Harbour is one of the resort’s few areas for improvement. Convenience arrives on your plate at the cost of being less elegant, sophisticated or progressive as Herrington is in general. The daily room rate includes entry to Mangoes, a pool and dockside restaurant that features The Calypso Bar and indoor or outdoor dining with friendly service but subpar food. Standards like Cobb Salad, Wings, Fried Pickles and Burgers take up most of the menu. Mangoes is open for lunch and dinner every day and breakfast on the weekends. Fortunately, right across the street is Chesapeake Market, which offers several great dishes, including a well-made grilled salmon served with a side of steamed vegetables. My daughter loved the seafood offerings, most of which are traditional Chesapeake Bay renderings, and my son was happy with the standard, kid friendly grilled cheese and fries. Other offerings at the market include a plethora of sandwiches, flat bread pizzas, a Hershey’s ice cream bar and treats made in-house. Wine, beer, basic provisions and snacks are available for sale in the grocery. You could also explore nearby North Beach for other restaurants or try Bella Italia in Friendship. Herrington Harbour and the surrounding area is a hobbyist’s landscape that should appeal to bicycle riders, history buffs, pleine air painters, horse lovers, locavores and even oenophiles.the resort never feels over-crowded, even on busy summer weekends. Herrington Harbour is large enough to escape for a quiet walk, reclusive beachside read or a brisk game of tennis. It is a hidden gem on the Chesapeake. I predict it won’t be secret for long though, as area couples and families discover this little jewel on the Chesapeake that is right in their backyard.
