MESSAGE FROM THE CHAMBER “There is only one thing stronger all E the O F than D I R C T O B O A R D R S armies of the world, and that is an idea whose time has come.” — Victor Hugo S T A F F The Scranton Board of Trade was born in December of 1867 and reincorporated in 1923 as the Scranton Chamber of Commerce. The goal of both organizations was the same as today—promoting A D V E R T I S and E R serving D I R as E C a T voice O R for Y economic vitality the business community. This voice strengthened in the aftermath of World War II, when the leaders of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce established a new model of economic development, with community-driven D I R E C T and O R S infrastructure building efforts, and a member and citizen driven industrial marketing plan for the region. The Chamber has continued to evolve as a leader in economic development – with a broadened mission that includes small business support, lending, workforce development, leadership enhancement and providing member access to public sector leaders and resources. As we look back at 150 years of challenges and successes, and with nod to the founders’ vision of providing them a voice, we have asked our members to tell us how they feel about our region and The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce. A selection of those thoughts appears throughout this year’s Business and Buyers’ Guide. This year’s digital components also include enhanced versions of those personal messages. While much has evolved over the past 150 years, The Chamber is still the strongest advocate for the region’s business community. We are confident that you will find the 2018 Business and Buyers’ Guide useful and an important resource to support the success of your business.
