LECTURE SERIES ASKING THE LAW’S ‘MAN QUESTION’: MEN, MASCULINITIES AND THE LEGAL PROFESSIONS PROFESSOR RICHARD COLLIER 22 MARCH 2017 | 6.30PM-7.30PM KEELE HALL | THE SALVIN ROOM political dimensions of studying masculinity within the context of the law We face complex problems in the legal profession around work-life balance, and hyper-masculine cultures, associated with neoliberalism, appear to authorise the very practices that are implicated in contributing to the poor wellbeing of many legal practitioners. With a focus on the discussions around fatherhood, Professor Collier will consider the political dimensions of studying masculinity within the context of the law and explore ways in which it might be possible to ask the law’s ‘man question’. Richard Collier is Professor of Law and Social Theory at Newcastle University. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has published extensively on men, masculinity, families and the Law. 11
