Aimee, the Hug Manager at Age UK wrote: ‘Both the members, staff, volunteers and people witnessing the ceremony felt that it was really beautiful and heart felt. They loved that so much care was taken in getting to know them and felt that the whole atmosphere was lovely. This is not something that many of our members would have been involved in before and they have been quite resistant to get involved however since taking part in the ceremonies many have mentioned that they wished they had given it ago.’

A Water Ceremony within a country walk was led by Jill Shuker. Water was well and truly celebrated its beauty and mystery from the droplets in a baptismal font, to the scattering of ashes on the sea. Interfaith minister Paula Alter conducted the ceremony on the newly constructed viewing platform overlooking the river; three kingfishers flew by with a flash of metallic turquoise - nature’s offering to the occasion.

A Memorial Celebration, in which a life was lovingly remembered, with beautiful music and inspirational words. Interfaith Minister Anthea Ballam created this ceremony to commemorate the life of her beloved mother, who died many years ago. Her funeral had been a depressing and impersonal occasion, for such a vibrant, fun loving lady. Over coffee, Judith Dandy of Dandelion Farewells spoke about funerals in the 21st Century and answered questions.

Cheri Mugeridge said: “I had tears in my eyes as Anthea talked warmly about her mum’s life (with its many ups and downs) and the things she loved to do. She showed us photos, read poems and played music. It was a truly loving tribute, and made me think about my own mum’s funeral which was a very traditional and extremely sad and mournful affair. I now know that there are so many choices that funerals and memorials do not have to be dour affairs, but more real joyful celebrations of life, tailored to suit the person who has gone and the families and friends left behind. I now look forward to planning my own send off!”
