What makes us human?

by Jill Hilton

I have been inspired to write something after listening for some months now, to Jeremy Vine’s guests on radio 2 speaking about “What makes us human”.

It was the last speaker who said it was our ability to wage war, and carry out atrocious acts of violence against each other, that stirred something within me, enough to write down my thoughts and feelings on what makes us human. So I begin:

What is this glue that holds us together? This question popped into my head following an email my husband received about the best glue ever. This was in connection with his hobby of furniture making. I said I felt the best glue ever was love. It’s what holds us together, when we are far apart geographically, and even in death. (In case you’re wondering, my husband was only mildly surprised by my answer!).

It’s that invisible substance that we are all held within, a framework that cannot be seen, but can be felt within the heart. It’s what we, as Interfaith ministers, strive to be connected to as we create sacred space within and around us. It works like glue because it is what we all long to be in touch with, it’s what we strive to be a part of.

When we are in the flow of this love, we can create anything, do anything we want. We have a strength beyond our human understanding. Maybe it is the awareness of this love, and the fact that we can choose to be a part of it or not, that makes us human. The birds, the animals, don’t have this conscious

awareness, they just are. They are a part of this love, they know themselves only as this. There is no stepping in and stepping out of it, they are love, a part of God’s creation.
