IJGA STUDENT
EXAMPLE
Former hockey player turned golfer with
lots of experience in the gym training as an
athlete. This student surpassed all the average
power numbers found on the PGA TOUR for
rotational power, core power, and also upper
and lower body power. Strength numbers
were on par, or slightly below, TOUR numbers
with no strength tests being cause for concern.
The Functional Movement Assessment and
TPI Physical Screen, however, found several
failed tests for mobility and stability which
will all directly affect the effi ciency of his
golf swing. These include limited shoulder
mobility, limited t-spine rotation to the
right, limited bilateral internal hip rotation,
s-posture, and limited bilateral dorsifl exion
in the ankles. This young player is an over-
powered pyramid, being limited by his wide
performance block over a narrow movement
base. Improving his functional movement
base, with his individual corrective exercises
given, will allow him to truly express his
performance qualities into a powerful and
effi cient golf swing.
Once you know what kind of pyramid you
have, you can prioritize your training and
ensure you’re working on what will make
you a better overall athlete and golfer.
