If you ’ re reading this you probably are already a golfer .
No matter at what stage your golf game is at ; meaning you are a seasoned player on the Junior Tour or just beginning your golf career , there are some things that are important to know about this great game .
Obviously you should have fun .
Secondly the more quality time you spend on improving your skills the sooner your game will improve and hence the sooner you can have more fun .
Next you need to �nd some quality instruction . There are many good instructors nowadays , anywhere there is a golf course in India , thanks to the efforts of the IGU and quali�ed individuals who have improved the game in all aspects . Teaching has improved and become more concentric in its methods so more instructors are using the same ‘ language ’. This becomes helpful to a student because whether they are pursuing the sport from ‘ any point on the compass ’ they will hear the same terms and he taught the same basics .
You need to learn about the etiquettes . That ’ s why it ’ s called a gentleman ’ s game . Knowing where to stand , why it ’ s important to be still while someone is playing a shot , why it ’ s important to be quiet on the course ; these and many more examples of good etiquette can be found almost anywhere . ( Especially if you ask an old guy like me !)
You need to learn the Rules of Golf . You can be the greatest , most talented golfer in the world but if you don ’ t know the rules you ’ re not playing golf . If you ever want to compete , you ’ ll need to know the rules .
You need to learn how to play the game in a reasonable amount of time . 5 - 6 hour rounds on the course are not my idea of having fun .
Thankfully at this time golf equipment is more readily available and friendlier to the wallet . Most youngsters are extremely brand conscious ( EXPENSIVE ) but it doesn ’ t have to be that way . Quality equipment by reputable manufacturers is available in the market for under Rs . 25,000 , and that includes the bag as well as the set . An ‘ A ’ brand doesn ’ t necessarily mean it will strike a golf ball farther or more accurately than the ‘ B ’ brand . Your instructor will make more of a difference in that regard than a golf club .
Golf is a great game to take up at any age . Since coming to India in 1997 , I ’ ve seen many youngsters go from just starting out to now playing on some of the major tours on the planet .
But playing golf has many different facets and playing on the pro tour is only one of them . Playing the game for your health , or the joy of striking a solid shot , or enjoying a round with friends are just as important reasons to why play the greatest game in the �rst place .
