Magbalay and Kroo bay; the
slum areas worst hit by the
epidemic, have thousands
of people moving in every
year.
These
slums
are
rife
with
communicable
diseases so the ministry
is making plans to review
the public health ordinance
which has been untouched
since independence. Miatta
explains that the ordinance
will be more in line with the
needs of today’s society.
When Miatta was growing up
in Sierra Leone, there were no
dump trucks nor was there
a waste management system
provided by Freetown City
Council. And yet she explains
that people found a way to
turn their organic waste into
compost by digging a hole
in their compounds. Today
there are still no public dump
trucks and yet she says that
people seem to have forgotten
how to manage their waste.
Miatta explains that she is
going to spend whatever time
she has at the ministry to turn
things back the right side up
and that includes internal
changes at the ministry.
Upon
accepting
the
appointment as Minister of
Health Miatta has had to
resign from her position at
Eli Lilly. She has taken office
at a time when top officials
