RV WORKSHOP
POP-TOP BUMP STOPS
My pop-top is a 17ft single-axle van and it has a significant rear overhang , which can drag its tail when exiting steep driveways , particularly those of some service stations .
I replaced the dropped axle with a straight axle and fitted new springs , which had sagged a little after seven years . This raised the van about 80mm .
It looks much better than it did but I added these small adaptations to the rear corner stabilisers to protect against any future dragging that may occur .
It took a few hours of pondering and about two hours of fiddling with two old rubber boat trailer rollers and some scrap steel and bolts . A bit of welding and drilling , and I then bolted them on the stabilisers so that they become a bumper against the caravan ' s chassis .
I haven ' t come across a steep driveway yet to see how the perform , but I feel much better knowing they will soften any impact .
I ’ m intrigued , Rod . It seems like an interesting modification – I ’ m keen to hear how your ‘ stoppers ’ perform once you ’ ve put them to the test ! – Ed
Thanks for your great online mag with such useful advice .
