Fit those tow mirrors ! No arguments !
FITTING TOWING MIRRORS
It continues to amaze me just how many caravanners do not fit and use extension mirrors . Australian Design Rule 14 / 02 – Rear Vision Mirrors specifies that rear view mirrors must provide a specific field of view .
Attaching a large trailer , such as a caravan , effectively blocks this view , hence the need to fit extension mirrors .
A simple measurement by a police officer will determine if your mirrors provide sufficient vision and , if they don ’ t , you can expect an infringement notice for “ fail to have a clear view of the road and traffic , ahead , behind and to each side of the driver ”. In Victoria , it ’ s a $ 233 fine .
ROUNDABOUTS
For some reason , there is confusion about the rules for roundabouts and why they differ from state to state , particularly with regards to indicating . Even Victoria ’ s RACV acknowledges that it receives feedback that the rules for exiting a roundabout in New South Wales , Queensland and South Australia are different to Victoria .
The truth is , they are all much the same in that if turning left , you must approach the roundabout with your left indicator flashing . If going straight ahead , you do not signal left or right as you approach . If turning right , you must approach with your right indicator flashing . All good so far .
The confusion comes when exiting the roundabout . For instance , in New South Wales , you must indicate left when exiting the roundabout , whereas in Victoria , you need only indicate left off a roundabout if practical to do so . Confused ? So was I .
