This month , we will look at the effects of charging , particularly from solar panels , to see whether the situation improves .
As we mentioned last month , batteries are like water tanks . As we use the stored water on our garden , the tank drains . In order to keep our garden watered , we need to keep our tank topped up — and so it is with our batteries .
The most obvious solution is to plug the RV into 240V mains power and let the onboard battery charger do its job . But if you are free-camping , you will need to rely on other methods .

Solar is the most popular alternative . Almost all new vans come with roof-mounted solar panels . For those whose mobile accommodation is in a camper trailer or tent , you ’ ll likely carry a portable panel or two .
Solar panels are a fantastic way to generate electricity , especially when you ’ re miles from the nearest powerpoint . Roof-mounted panels are particularly convenient as there is no setting up involved ; however , they do have their failings .
It ’ s always satisfying to see the solar panels keep up with your power usage .
