HOME-MADE
GREY WATER TANK
We do a lot of off-grid national-park vanning,
so we needed a grey water tank. I wasn't
happy with the layout of my new van’s waste
system anyway, so we decided to make our
own grey water holding system.
My van had a 6in chassis with a raiser. I
purchased three 3m lengths of 150mm sewer
grade PVC pipe, and fitted screwed caps to all
three lengths at both ends.
Then it was a simple matter of laying it out on
the ground, wedging various points to create
a ‘fall’ over the entire system, then fitting
elbows and cross joints to have it all
interconnected and ready to install under the
van against the 6 chassis – far higher than the
previous grey water waste system.
A drain point was fitted to be in the same
place as previous, as well as an overflow
point above the entire new piping system, in
case it became clogged, so wastewater would
not enter the van.
Then it was a simple matter of creating S
bends from each existing drain point
underneath the floor, which connected directly
into the new waste system.
The grey water plumbing on Norm’s van before
he fitted his DIY grey water tank system.
Norm’s home-made grey water tank can
hold more than 85L of waste water.
