BACKYARD BLITZ
Now that we’ve settled into the
depths of a bitter winter, many
of you would already be in the
tropics. For those who remain
south-bound, whether by work
or family commitments, or
because money doesn’t grow
on trees, there’s no reason to
stay cooped up.
I’ve resolved to explore
more of my own backyard.
I realise I’m biased, but I
honestly believe that Victoria
has some of the best
scenery, campsites and
destinations in Australia.
In any case, you might
think that by hitching up
your van and heading an
hour or two down the road
isn’t getting into the RV
spirit. But I disagree. Think
of it this way: to a person
in New South Wales, South
Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula
would seem like an enticing
destination. But to a Fleurieu
Peninsula local, their home
region might seem like more
of the same. It’s only a
question of perspective.
Alter it just a little and a world
of adventure will open.
The point is, any suggestion
that RVing has to be an
expensive and time-consuming

endeavour is fundamentally
flawed. I would be the first to
agree that a 12-month Big
Lap is the ultimate RV dream.
Trust me, it’s on my list. But in
between family holidays with
our Goldstream sitting faithfully
behind the old Cruiser, I’ll get
up the road for a night or two
and explore a place I’d only
ever thought of as a dot on
the map of my own backyard.
