RV FEATURE For a long time, before solving this problem, we remained in a heightened state whenever we needed to use the microwave or kettle at dinner, worried that we would experience another voltage drop and be woken from the same alarm again… With this problem now fixed, we have continued our family caravanning adventures and haven’t heard the alarm since. BENEFITS OF LITHIUM Let’s break down the benefits of choosing lithium for your caravan. 1. They’re marketed as the more compact and lighter option, which means you gain more space for storage. As a family of five who live in our van full-time, extra storage space is something that excites us probably a little more than it should! 2. Payload is reduced with the batteries being considerably lighter, consequently improving fuel efficiency — another massive tick for the traveller who is on a tight budget. 3. Their lifespan is considerably longer, with a higher average of cycles (we’re talking a few hundred for AGM versus a few thousand for lithium), so they won’t need replacing as often. Pay more upfront to save more in the long run… it seems like a no-brainer, right? 4. They are faster charging and can utilise more of their charge than AGM batteries. Lead-acid batteries need to be recharged at 50 per cent capacity whereas lithium can be used down to its last 20 per cent before needing recharge. Again, a clear indication of lithium superiority. (An earlier version of this article implied that the caravan’s lithium batteries may have been the cause of the problem. We apologise for any confusion.)
