A major requirement for safely towing a
conventional caravan is that it does not exceed
the laden weight of whatever tows it. But many do.
Further, to be able to to restart on a steep hill,
the tow vehicle needs a great deal of torque
from rest. Low-speed torque is needed when
traversing soft sand.
Until recently, diesel engines had a major edge here,
but recent petrol engines have caught up.
While petrol and diesel engines are now fine for
towing, global warming is at a level such that
burning fossil fuels for any purpose must soon
cease. Such vehicles will be progressively phased
out. It is odds-on that fossil fuels taxes will rise
